Four Simple Dental Hygiene Tips for a Healthy Smile

One way to radiate a beautiful smile is to have well-cared teeth and gums. Investing in oral hygiene is worth every effort because it prevents problems, saves money, and keeps your smile beautiful.

Are you diligent with your dental hygiene routine? If you are struggling with oral health care, Park Avenue Dental in New York, New York, is here to help you every step of the way. If you’ve been dreaming of a healthy, confident smile, follow these healthy tips from Dr. Mary Taudel.

Brush the right way

Do you brush at least twice every day? If you said yes, you rock! Toothbrushing eliminates food debris and unwanted bacteria to prevent infections, decay, and bad breath.

While you brush your teeth, are you doing it right? If not, follow the below brushing tips.

  • Brush twice daily for at least two minutes each time
  • Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle against the gums, and use tooth-wide back and forth gentle motions to clean your teeth
  • Brush every tooth surface, including the chewing, inner, and outer surfaces
  • Remember to brush your tongue as harmful bacteria like hiding there
  • Change your brush every three months or as soon as the bristles appear frayed
  • Be gentle during brushing, as aggression can cause enamel wear or gum recession

Flossing

This removes plaque and food debris between teeth, an area not easily accessed by your toothbrush. Floss at least once daily, especially before retiring to bed. The type of dental floss doesn’t matter if the technique is right.

Using a gentle rubbing motion, guide the floss between teeth. When the floss forms a “C-shape” against the tooth, gently slide into the area between the teeth and gums. Use the floss to rub against the tooth using an up-and-down motion while moving away from the gums.

Eat healthy

Avoid sugary and acidic foods to prevent enamel erosion and tooth decay. Keep your mouth hydrated and stay away from tobacco products. We encourage dental-friendly foods like fruits and veggies. Moreover, milk products like cheese and yogurt bolster oral health with essential minerals.

Visit a dentist

You should see your dentist every six months for routine dental exams and cleanings. Regular dental check-ups prevent, detect, and treat oral issues before they become painful and costly to treat.
