Root Canals

The Root Canal Treatment is a Gentle and Painless Procedure for Saving Natural Teeth

Have you been told you need a root canal? It may not be the best news you want, but this treatment provides an opportunity to save your teeth. Your dentist typically suggests root canal treatment (RCT) after exhausting restorative options such as fillings, crowns, inlays, and other dental prosthetics.

Park Avenue Dental of New York, New York, offers root canal therapy to save severely damaged or infected teeth. Instead of removing such teeth, Dr. Mary Taudel removes the diseased pulp tissue and restores your infected tooth to function optimally for many years.

Why you may need a root canal

Dental decay is easily treatable with fillings and crowns. However, when left untreated, it may reach the innermost part of the tooth (pulp), causing infection. An infected tooth causes numerous unpleasant symptoms, including:

  • Extreme pain
  • Tooth sensitivity to cold and hot foods
  • Tooth discoloration
  • A recurrent pimple-like swelling on the gums
  • Swelling in your gums, face, or lymph nodes

Dental infection can’t be reversed with antibiotics or your body’s immunity. The only treatment is removing the infected tissues with root canal treatment. A root canal is a better alternative than extraction, which isn’t only excessive but also costly in the long run as the extracted tooth needs replacement.

What to expect from the root canal procedure

You may have heard or read that root canals are extremely painful. This is further from the truth because modern root canals are painless thanks to anesthetics and light touch techniques. You’ll only experience slight pressure as the dentist works on your tooth.

When your dentist recommends a root canal, the procedure usually takes the below easy steps.

  • Numbing your tooth with local anesthesia
  • Isolating the infected tooth with a dental dam to prevent saliva contamination
  • Creating an access hole at the topmost part of the tooth
  • Removing the infected tissue from the pulp chamber and root canals using the access hole
  • Sanitizing the inside of the tooth to remove all traces of harmful bacteria
  • Filling the empty chamber and root canals with a rubber-like substance (gutta-percha) to seal out future bacterial infections
  • Restoring the tooth with a filling or dental crown

Before you go home, we’ll give you post-treatment instructions to ensure a smooth recovery. Typically, we’ll recommend antibiotics and pain medications to manage the discomforts you may experience. We’ll also emphasize diligent dental hygiene to prevent oral infections.
