What’s The Ideal Age for Dental Implants? Dr. Mary Taudel Explains

Park Avenue Dental recommends dental implants for those looking for a permanent solution to tooth loss in New York, New York. Dental implants replace dentures and bridge the edentulous gap to restore your smile and confidence. Moreover, dental implants can last a lifetime, providing durable function and aesthetics.

While dental implants are viable teeth replacement options, you may ask whether you are too old or young for these restorations. Don’t worry! Implants dentist, Dr. Mary Taudel is here to explain the age factor in implant placement.

What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a titanium screw placed in your jawbone to replace your tooth root and the tooth itself. A dental implant is a versatile tooth loss solution because it can anchor one or more replacement teeth. All potential implant beneficiaries must have sufficient jawbone to ensure bone cells grow around the implant for enhanced stability.

Teeth implants are popular because they offer numerous benefits, including the following:

  • Prevent facial sagging to preserve your youthful appearance
  • Prevent jawbone loss
  • Restored confidence
  • Natural feel and appearance
  • Low maintenance
  • Lifetime durability
  • High success rate
  • Restored oral function
  • Stability when eating or laughing

The right age for dental implants

In truth, there is no minimum age for dental implants, but if you want to benefit from one, you should have a fully developed jaw. Typically, this doesn’t happen unless you are in your late teens or early adult years. Our office rarely places implants in patients aged 17 and below. However, age doesn’t outrightly make you ineligible for implants. We use state-of-the-art dental imaging technology to evaluate your bone structure before placing an implant.

Am I too old for dental implants?

The beauty of dental implants is that they have no upper age limit, as long as you have sufficient jawbone and are in good health. This makes dental implants an ideal procedure for adults, including seniors in their 80s and 90s! So, if you are tired of your ill-fitting dentures, it’s never too late to switch to solid and permanent dental implants.
